What is guided imagery?

Guided imagery is about using mental imagery in a deeply relaxed state
of mind, guided by someone who takes you through the experience. Guided
imagery takes place in an altered state of relaxed focus. This state of
mind is deeply serene yet alert. Brain waves slow down considerably
from our normal waking consciousness. We are naturally at this relaxed
level just as we wake up before opening our eyes, or as we begin to fall
asleep. Another example is when we are completely engrossed in an
activity and lose track of time.
Guided imagery includes all of the senses: sight, sound, smell, taste, and
feeling. For instance, you can imagine an orange as you mentally see its
color, sense its texture, taste it, smell the fruit fragrance, and enjoy
this simple pleasure with your senses.
Intuition and spiritual inspiration can also come into play during imagery,
bringing additional information to guide you along your desired path or
purpose.
